Georgia-Pacific is seeking a Construction Manager to join the Engineering team at the Big Island Mill. This role is responsible for leading the field execution of the mill's capital project portfolio through construction oversight, contractor management, and coordination of internal and external resources. The Construction Manager serves as the bridge between project planning and field execution to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and with high quality.

Our Team
The Big Island Mill is a paper manufacturing facility located in Big Island, Virginia. The mill produces containerboard used to make corrugated packaging, utilizing a combination of recycled and virgin fiber to support a wide range of packaging applications across multiple industries.
What You Will Do
- Manage and coordinate contractors and construction resources in support of the mill's capital project portfolio, driving safe execution and successful project delivery.
- Partner with the mill safety team to ensure safe execution of construction activities and compliance with site safety expectations.
- Assist project managers with developing project scopes, schedules, budgets, and execution plans.
- Lead and support contractor pre-bid site visits, scope reviews, and constructability discussions.
- Provide input and coordinate constructability reviews during project development.
- Coordinate engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
- Coordinate and oversee project quality assurance activities, including inspections, testing, turnover documentation, and completion records.
- Develop, maintain, and drive closure of project punch lists, deficiencies, and action items.
- Ensure Georgia-Pacific and mill engineering, construction, and safety standards are incorporated into project execution.
- Support project managers in maintaining project schedules, budgets, and execution plans while identifying risks and opportunities.
- Maintain a strong field presence, spending the majority of time supporting active construction work, contractor coordination, safety observations, and issue resolution.
- Simultaneously support multiple projects in both pre-construction and construction phases.
- Participate in project commissioning, startup, and turnover activities to ensure successful project delivery.
- Support mill operations through participation in the duty team program, with opportunities for increased responsibility as a Duty Leader.
Technical Knowledge Expectations
Maintain working knowledge of industrial construction practices and provide oversight of field execution in the following areas:
- Millwright work, including equipment setting, precision alignment, bearings, couplings, and rotating equipment installation.
- Process and utility piping installation, routing, supports, and code compliance.
- Welding and fabrication, including application of ASME and AWS requirements where appropriate.
- Safe lifting, rigging, and heavy equipment installation.
- Structural steel and concrete construction.
- General industrial construction methods.
- Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems.
Safety & Field Engagement Expectations
- Demonstrate a proactive commitment to safety and risk reduction.
- Reinforce site safety expectations through daily field presence, coaching, accountability, and contractor engagement.
- Participate in safety walkthroughs, field observations, and risk assessments.
- Apply Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles to support a learning organization.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, maintenance, and contractor teams to identify and mitigate construction and operational risks.
- Support mill safety initiatives and continuous risk reduction efforts.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- 10+ years of experience in industrial construction, maintenance, engineering, or project execution environments, including 5+ years in construction management, site supervision, project management, or related leadership roles.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
- Experience managing multiple priorities and supporting diverse stakeholders.
- Knowledge and understanding of ASME and ANSI standards and codes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Project.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the organization.
- Working knowledge of rotating equipment, process piping, pressure vessels, and steam systems.
- Experience supporting or managing capital projects ranging from approximately $1 million to $25 million through planning, construction, commissioning, and startup.
- Experience managing large outages, shutdowns, and turnarounds.
- Demonstrated success managing multiple contractors and craft disciplines simultaneously.
- Experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Experience supporting engineering, maintenance, or technical teams.
- Experience with Passport or other CMMS systems.
- Experience in a pulp and paper mill or continuous-process manufacturing facility.
What Will Put You Ahead
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent construction leadership experience will also be considered.
- Experience coordinating engineering firms, OEMs, and construction contractors on large capital projects.
- Experience managing ASME and code-governed work, including pressure vessels, power piping, process piping, and structural steel.
- Familiarity with ASME Section IX, ASME B31.1/B31.3, AWS D1.1, and repair work involving R-stamp requirements.
- Proven startup and commissioning experience.
- Strong contractor management background.
- Knowledge of reliability-centered maintenance and root cause analysis methodologies.
- A track record of delivering projects safely, on schedule, and within budget.
For this role, we anticipate paying $120-$40K per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
